closer to the sun

Tonight I went for a walk with dad, about an hour before the sunset. People were playing soccer and volleyball on the field near where we live, and the all-girl team was winning the volleyball game (much like it seems the only serious contenders in the Way-family croquet match was Alicia and Lyn-Z).

We crossed the road and sat down on the cliff, watching as the light settled over the grass and the skyline. Like being in a city and not, at once.

Then we saw hot-air balloons. Four of them, to be exact. They were coming closer, hovering over the trees, and it was beautiful, absolutely stunning. But what was initially looking like a gorgeous sunset, complete with balloons (like a movie), turned into a comedy of errors pretty soon, with some pretty scary moments.

See, the first balloon meant to go down right in front of us. Only at the last second, there was a gust of wind and it lifted again, almost ending up in the middle of the road. However, the driver managed to get it airborne again, so that it reached the field on the other side of the road, where it bounce-bounce-bounced three times before landing on its side.

The second balloon almost ran into the only building in this field, but somehow swerved and executed a fairly smooth landing, swaying with the wind before the people (and the air) were let out.

The fourth balloon was the impressive one. It was the furthest away, and we saw it start going down where we know there are no fields large enough to comfortably land on. We gulped a little, but it started rising again after being completely out of sight beyond the trees. There was barely any wind at this point, so it stood practically still in the air for about ten minutes before it started coming closer to our field. It came down fast, then, but slowed enough just before touching down that the balloon barely swayed at all. Incredibly graceful, somehow, and a fantastic thing to get to see.

On the way back, we ended up right below a kestrel, hovering in the air, preparing for a dive. Dad said he felt like it was about to dive at us, and I agreed, but we still didn't move.

Now, I'm waiting for the joint aches to subside (modern medicine is sometimes marvelous) and looking at the dark outside. We can't see the stars, yet, but the closer we get to winter, the clearer they'll become.

I'd steal the death match meme, except I'm feeling sweet and cozy tonight. I'd rather talk about cuddling.

If you feel like it, give me two characters, bandom (MCR or MSI), DCU (Birds of Prey, the Bats (especially the ladies)), and Buffy, and I'll tell you about them cuddling. Wacky crossovers are totally okay, though please don't give me Bob and Batman.

I've been reading Birds of Prey all weekend (Gail Simone's run, not the other issues), because, well, I may or may not have a thing for awesome female superheroes. And I do still love Barbara Gordon. A lot. And I used to read Wikipedia entries on other things so I could keep up with fic canon (basically I am the most polyfannish fic reader ever), man, I totally understand liking superheroes. And the Bats are fabulously dysfunctional.

(Was it the one where Gerard was Joker? Because I really, really liked that one, but it depressed me a lot.

Hee, that's a fun habit, I think. I like Gerard as Nightwing because then I can make Lyn-Z the first Batgirl, and as I've mentioned like eight times now, I really like Babs. But you're right, it could be really interesting to reimagine the Bat-verse like that. Would Mikey be a Robin, then? The Robins in particular would be different, I think.

I LIKE this. Never apologize for geeking out in my LJ, I do it a lot myself. *grins* I don't know the Cartoon Network version of the Justice League, but I know the characters (obviously). Hmm, and making Ray the Blue Beetle would probably be too obvious for you, then. :D

You can totally ask for Gerard/Bob/Lyn-Z. I think I might actually be contemplating Bob and Batman, but we'll see what the evening shakes out.

Hee, yes. They know their Bob, man, and sometimes he just has to be snuggled into smiling. :D

[identity profile] mahoni.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to admit, I tend to avoid superhero comics because I'm wary of the portrayal of women in them. But I didn't know there was a comic about kickass female superheroes. I might have to look that up.

Yeah, it was the one with Gerard as the Joker. It was definitely kind of a bummer, but it kind of made me laugh, too. Mainly because I had no idea Gerard was the Joker until the very end and on one hand I felt very hilariously stupid. Doh.

Gerard and Mikey could both be Robins! That would make a lot of sense, actually. Though, in that case I don't think I could see Bob as Batman. It would have to be maybe Brian. Or someone else who is not part of the band, you know? Hm.

(Hey, how would you feel about someone else also doing a riff on Bob & Batman? In addition to yours? A very short riff?)

...yes, this is Bob and Batman

[identity profile] harborshore.livejournal.com 2009-08-25 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're not claustrophobic, are you?"

Bob shakes his head. He's a little woozy, still, and determinedly doesn't think about his leg.

The room they're in is small, too fucking small, and it's getting smaller. Apparently Joker's version of a funhouse includes mirrors that slide out of their frames to slice at you and rooms that shrink.

"If you sit down in front of me, I can use the reinforcements in my uniform to brace against the wall."

This is where Bob would start giggling hysterically if he wasn't in so much pain. This is Batman, okay? He's a legend in Gotham; Bob didn't think he actually existed. And, what? Bob's supposed to sit down and lean against him? Like, um, cuddling?

Batman sits down, bracing himself and looks at Bob. Bob thinks that's probably impatience behind the mask, there. Okay. He'd prefer a miraculous rescue, but he'll take this. So he manages to sit down without making his leg hurt much worse, and leans against Batman.

"I expect my associates to get us out soon," Batman says in a tone that's probably supposed to be calming.

"Yeah? Are they gonna get here before this room squishes us to death?" Ooops, he hadn't meant to say that. Must be the pain. Bob winces and shifts his leg over carefully. Just an inch, but it's enough for Batman to notice.

"You're injured?" he says sharply.

"Only a little," Bob says. "It was the mirrors, but it's just a scratch."

"I believe you're lying, Mr Bryar."

"Um. Bob would be better." If Bob didn't know better, he'd say that was an amused sound. But Batman doesn't laugh, right?

There's a pause. "You know, you did well tonight. You noticed what was happening and got the people you cared about out of there."

Thank god for that, though Lyn-Z's going to kick his ass for practically throwing her out of harm's way and catching the mirror with his leg. But he saw her run with Gerard, so they should both be outside.

Shit, but his leg is hurting. Bob makes an involuntary noise and leans back against Batman, trying to lift it a little or something, he's not sure what. Batman shifts to accommodate him and huh, that's actually comfortable.

"The way you move indicates that your injury's actually quite serious, Bryar. If we had more room, I'd take a look at it. As it is--"

"No, that's okay," Bob bites off.

And that's when the walls screech and for a second Bob is horribly afraid that they'll start moving in again, but they don't. Soon they slide apart enough to let in another costumed person (Robin, Bob's somewhat feverish brain supplies), who takes one look at them and smirks. "Cuddling, Batman?"

"Help the injured man, Robin," is the terse reply, and while Bob's not sure about supporting himself on someone who looks that slight, he's reassured by the way Robin pulls him to his feet like he weighs nothing at all. "You're going to be fine, Bob," is the last he hears of Batman, and he actually feels better when he hears it.

He's handed over to the EMTs and to Gerard and Lyn-Z, who take turns yelling at him and frantically touching him, like they're making sure he's real. He reaches out and pets at Gerard's hair, then touches Lyn's cheek and smiles at them both. "Don't worry," he says, "Batman says it'll be alright."

Read Gail Simone's run, not the other ones--it's issues 56-112. Seriously, I hadn't read comics since I was ten because of my issues with the way female heroes are portrayed in them, and then I liked UA and made this girl on my flist rec me comics. And she knows me, so she gave me Birds of Prey. Also, Batgirl Year One was a lot of fun. But Birds of Prey is Barbara Gordon (former Batgirl), Black Canary, and Huntress.

I really loved the end--when Mikey's there, too? I thought that packed a hell of a punch. So I did love the villains, but yes, it made me a little sad, too. Sap, I am.

Oh, yes, that's very true. This is the point when I get really random and say Amanda Palmer, if not Brian, I mean. But Mikey could also be a Robin to Gerard's Batman, maybe. I'm not sure which one I like better. [livejournal.com profile] nokomis305 wrote a ficlet where Gerard, Mikey, Bob and Lyn-Z are the four Robins, which I sort of love a lot.

(I would feel excellent about that. Go forth and riff! :D)

YAY, I'm so glad you like it! I decided Batman could be extremely comfortable to lean on if he decides to be, and I also decided he would approve of Bob's heroism. :D

Oh, I'm so glad you liked it! I've read DCU fic before, but it's been a good long while. And I couldn't have done Kon POV at all, that I know. ♥

It would just--I would love it, because I could write about the gender issues of the scene, the way they've both been taken for groupies backstage when holding drum sticks and a bass, and I could write about the craziness of MSI along with this steady, slow pining that turns into a relationship and, yes. I really want to write this. It stems from a prompt that was basically a prompt for girlslash porn (what do Lyn-Z and Kitty do when they have a girl's night in?) and because I apparently suddenly don't know how to keep anything short, well.

Possibly Batman is a bit like Bob: gruff and stoic and camera-shy, but also a big softie deep down. :P

"Oh yeah," Ian says, playing along even though they both know Victoria would never ever sleep with any of them. Ever.

LOOOOOOOOOOOL trufax.

I should probably read more Cabfic just to laugh at Cash more.

VEE IT'S TOTALLY WHEN, NOT IF! *grabby hands* :DDDDD

YOU ARE THE MOAST AMAZING OH MAN. ILUUUUUUU. Um, Pete/Mikey? :D? YOU ARE TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. WHO SENT YOU? GOD, BUDDHA, ALIENS? MAYBE YOU ARE A MANIFESTATION OF ALL MY DEEPEST DESIRES? AN ANGEL SENT TO ME TO PROMOTE PEACE LOVE AND CUDDLES? A BENEVOLENT SPIRIT OF SOME KIND, COME TO PROMOTE AWESOMENESS? EITHER WAY, I LOVE YOUR FACE :DDD

[identity profile] blindmouse.livejournal.com 2009-08-26 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
Mmm, okay, that sounds like all kinds of awesome. And hey, if it's MSI and they fuck around with interviews, could it be canon-based including false canon? Because that could be fun - MSI as a band who sort of exist somewhere between truth and legend?

I could write about the craziness of MSI along with this steady, slow pining that turns into a relationship

Ooh, yes, so much yes.

Awwwww, Bob/Ray cuddling would be the best. Poor Bob getting cuddled against his will:)

In my head, they're actually messing around at this point, but Ian's the only one who has figured out that it might be a little more than that. Despite his spaciness, he knows how to see stuff like that coming. Cash remains a bit oblivious, of course. ♥

Hee, thank you!

I--truthfully, when I said I was up for crossovers, I thought "Well, that one is obviously impossible." But then, not so much. Of course, one of them had to be gravely injured, or it would NEVER have worked.
