prompts! because writing about friendship is always fun

So I'm making soup, and that made me think about writing. (Shut up.) I haven't felt like working on any of my longer fics for a while (for those of you keeping track, the current priority order goes: 1. Brian getting hypothermia, 2. the Theatre Production, 3. Ray/Mikey college AU of awkward pining, 4. Big Bang sequel), but now I want to write short things. Tiny bits of warmth for the fall, if you will.

So here's what I want: give me a fandom or a crossover--bandom, BTVS, Veronica Mars, DCU, others if you feel like giving me a REALLY wacky crossover (hint: I love it), a pairing or character, and a prompt quote or picture. I want the prompt to have something to do with fall, friendship, or warmth, or all three. So if someone feels like linking to a soup recipe, that's totally okay.

Oh, oh, this. How do you make me fall so in love with characters in such a short space?

If you don't mind, I would like a story about why Rick was crying, or what happens next.

"Wait, Rick, don't just--"

Aria sounds out of breath behind him but Rick wipes his eyes on his sleeve and keeps running up the stairs. He just had to get out of there, has to find somewhere to be alone, but he doesn't have his keys so his room is out (Kit would choose today to have a lab report due and an important meeting with his professor). The lounge it is. At least there's a couch; he practically falls onto it, curling up and shaking.

It's like he can still hear them. Frat boys in their car, cruising around the fucking campus of liberal hippie students, looking for targets. He's a fucking faggot, is he? Wears girl's jeans and blue eyeshadow, doesn't he? And then two of them got out and pushed him around, goddamn jocks, so much faster. They took his bag, too.

In fact, the only reason they stopped was that Aria came running, threatening to call the cops. She has the angriest eyes of the whole campus when she wants to, and a voice that can cut through the loudest of crowds. She always says it's a remnant from leading the high school drama club; it gets shrill when twenty dramatic high school students get together, real fucking shrill, so she had to learn to bellow.

And so she saved him (again, she keeps doing that and he's not sure what that means). But he's hurting, now, even though only two of them landed punches, and he can't stop crying for some reason.

Aria has an uncertain hand on her back, she sucks so much at the comforting part, but Rick is glad she's here, can't stop leaning into her touch. He just wants Kit here too, slow voice and calm hands.

When they're done with the soup, Rick starts telling Kit what had happened, low voice scraping over things that should never, ever happen, things that should never be said. Kit has to busy himself with rinsing out the mugs, because no, no way, no one should ever hurt Rick, it shouldn't be allowed.

Aria falls in every now and then, to fill out the story, but she's very laid-back about her own involvement. "Just lucky," she says, voice betraying how terrified she was.

Kit tries to go through the Things to Do in a situation like this. "Did you talk to security yet?"

Both of them shake their heads.

"I don't really want to," Rick tells them both. "I just--what are they going to do? It's a public street, they can't keep frat boy assholes from driving on it."

"They can keep those two from beating people up," Kit says, trying for mild but sounding more scared than he likes.

"You know they're basically useless," Aria says, and Kit has to nod.

"Still," he says firmly. "Still, we should--"

Rick nods. "I will, I will, just not yet, okay? I need to fucking calm down first."

"Let's go hang out in your room," Aria suggests. "You can wash off the eyeliner and Kit can look at your ribs?"

Both Rick and Kit blush at that, and she raises an eyebrow but doesn't comment.

Back in the room, they get Rick into the chair and he takes off his shirt, wincing a bit. Kit feels along his ribs, careful not to look up at Rick's face or at Aria, because he's not sure what's showing in his eyes right now.

"I don't think it's broken," he says finally. "When Bradley Ford broke his rib at soccer camp," both Aria and Rick snort at that and Kit looks at them both quellingly, "it felt different, and it also hurt him a lot more to be touched. But you're going to the health center anyway, okay?"

Rick rolls his eyes and puts his shirt back on. "Yeah, yeah, I know. This guy is a pain in the ass of a room mate," he says, directed at Aria.

"Being taken care of, it's not so bad, though." She sounds a little wistful. Kit knows she doesn't call home much; she told him she feels like a changeling. Of course, she might be one, but he didn't tell her that.

He doesn't say it now either. "I vote Pirates," he says instead, and is rewarded by seeing both of them smile. Jack Sparrow cures all ills, or so they say, and if he has to hide a shiver when Rick leans against his shoulder and another one when Aria lies down and puts her head in his lap, well. Sometimes that's just how it goes.

You. This deserves proper feedback, but I just got back from a day of lectures on three hours sleep and all I can do is clutch at my heart and stare at the screen. Because -- slow voice and calm hands & voice scraping over things that should never, ever happen, things that should never be said & she told him she feels like a changeling. Of course, she might be one, but he didn't tell her that, holy shit. How do you do this to me.

Dude. I can't say more but I'd love to have more, oh.

"They can keep those two from beating people up," Kit says, trying for mild but sounding more scared than he likes.

and

"Let's go hang out in your room," Aria suggests. "You can wash off the eyeliner and Kit can look at your ribs?"

Both Rick and Kit blush at that, and she raises an eyebrow but doesn't comment.

I am slightly in love with all three of them already. ♥

This comment made me beam and squirm and, you know, it's so good to hear original stuff is captivating too, you know?

A bit! I've figured out what they look like and started writing the aftermath of the movie-watching. I don't know where it's going, but that's okay! PS. If this goes anywhere I'm setting up a filter or a comm or something tiny, I'm assuming you want to be on that?
