the missing voice of the conversation

When making this entry on representation and voice last night, I asked if someone could find me a link to Hassa Helal reading her whole poem on the fatwa, the one that earned her death threats. [livejournal.com profile] delphinapterus found it for me. It has English subtitles, too. Worth watching. The translation is fairly awkward, but oh, do you ever get the gist of what she is saying.

Linked because I couldn't make embedding work.

Thanks for this, and for your earlier post. Lately I get more and more frustrated -- with myself and with other people -- when excuses are made about exclusion and silencing, regardless of whether it's on a large, public scale or in something as theoretically trivial as fanfic.

In a word, yes. It's just so glaring, so hit-you-over-the-head-all-the-time, I hate it so fucking much. And I get caught in the trap too, of privileging certain voices. Infuriating.
