i just can't comprehend how catastrophic this is for such a focused community. a lot of the families must know each other.

not necessarily--it's a youth camp for the Norwegian Social Democratic party, whose youth group has 9500 members. And for this camp people come from all over Scandinavia (and the world). But the kids, yeah. They know each other.
