so yesterday was an important day
Mar. 9th, 2010 09:28 pmInternational Women's Day, to be more precise. I spent it buried in my thesis (which has the appropriate theme of feminist translation) and thinking about what to say. Because as you lot know, I talk about women a lot, I talk about feminism a lot, and I wanted to post something. I thought about my Fuck You, She's Awesome list, which includes Hillary Clinton and Anna Lind and Shailja Patel and Martha Jones and Donna Noble and Barbara Gordon and Pippi Longstocking and Buffy Summers and Willow and Tara and Anya and Stephanie Brown and Cassandra Cain and Veronica Mars and Alicia Fennel and my mom and my sister and so many of you--it's one of those lists I start and have no hope of finishing.
And that's it, isn't it? That's all I need to say. We're just that good, we're just that awesome. It's a shitty world for us, in many ways, and sometimes I have to mentally recite, "It's systemic, it has nothing to do with you, it's systemic, it has nothing to do with you," in order to keep my chin up and keep going. But the most important thing of all is just that: remember how awesome you are. You, yourself, not because of your work or because you say nice things or because of anything external. Just you. Awesome.
