closer to the sun

Tonight I went for a walk with dad, about an hour before the sunset. People were playing soccer and volleyball on the field near where we live, and the all-girl team was winning the volleyball game (much like it seems the only serious contenders in the Way-family croquet match was Alicia and Lyn-Z).
We crossed the road and sat down on the cliff, watching as the light settled over the grass and the skyline. Like being in a city and not, at once.
Then we saw hot-air balloons. Four of them, to be exact. They were coming closer, hovering over the trees, and it was beautiful, absolutely stunning. But what was initially looking like a gorgeous sunset, complete with balloons (like a movie), turned into a comedy of errors pretty soon, with some pretty scary moments.
See, the first balloon meant to go down right in front of us. Only at the last second, there was a gust of wind and it lifted again, almost ending up in the middle of the road. However, the driver managed to get it airborne again, so that it reached the field on the other side of the road, where it bounce-bounce-bounced three times before landing on its side.
The second balloon almost ran into the only building in this field, but somehow swerved and executed a fairly smooth landing, swaying with the wind before the people (and the air) were let out.
The fourth balloon was the impressive one. It was the furthest away, and we saw it start going down where we know there are no fields large enough to comfortably land on. We gulped a little, but it started rising again after being completely out of sight beyond the trees. There was barely any wind at this point, so it stood practically still in the air for about ten minutes before it started coming closer to our field. It came down fast, then, but slowed enough just before touching down that the balloon barely swayed at all. Incredibly graceful, somehow, and a fantastic thing to get to see.
On the way back, we ended up right below a kestrel, hovering in the air, preparing for a dive. Dad said he felt like it was about to dive at us, and I agreed, but we still didn't move.
Now, I'm waiting for the joint aches to subside (modern medicine is sometimes marvelous) and looking at the dark outside. We can't see the stars, yet, but the closer we get to winter, the clearer they'll become.
I'd steal the death match meme, except I'm feeling sweet and cozy tonight. I'd rather talk about cuddling.
If you feel like it, give me two characters, bandom (MCR or MSI), DCU (Birds of Prey, the Bats (especially the ladies)), and Buffy, and I'll tell you about them cuddling. Wacky crossovers are totally okay, though please don't give me Bob and Batman.

Date: 2009-08-25 11:40 am (UTC)Frederica, excellent. *adds to book list* I just got my paycheck for the summer, and given that I've been sick off and on for a month, I'm going to get myself some early birthday presents. :D

Date: 2009-08-25 11:42 am (UTC)And it had to be dub-con cuddling--the only time I've managed to get Bob to cuddle someone else it was because he was saving Brian from hypothermia (why yes, my WIP list is full of ridiculousness, why do you ask?)

Date: 2009-08-25 03:35 pm (UTC)As soon as I read that I suddenly NEEDED Bob&Batman cuddling fic. I'm not asking, I'm just saying.
(Now I'm trying to cast a ridiculous Batman AU with Gerard as Bruce Wayne and Bob as, I have no idea, Vicki Vale or something. Or Selina Kyle. Though I think Lyn-Z would make a better Selina Kyle. Maybe? I'm not that versed in DCU...)
I hope it's okay if I friend you?

Date: 2009-08-25 03:50 pm (UTC)(Oh dude, that'd be amazing. I'd almost say reverse it and make Bob Batman, though, if we're talking an actual story? Gerard is so expressive and emotional, the only way I could see him as Batman would be if, say, Mikey was dead, and I can't do that. But Gerard could be Nightwing (the grown-up first Robin) and hell yes, Lyn-Z could be Selena Kyle.
The reason I know anything about DCU is that I wanted to be Batgirl when I was nine, man. It's a mean and vicious canon, but it has some fantastic characters.)
It's totally okay! I've been meaning to do that as well, but I'm a little shy when it comes to these things. *grins*

Date: 2009-08-25 04:20 pm (UTC)(Gerard could totally be Nightwing! That would be cool. I've actually read a Bob-as-Batman story. It was essentially a retelling of The Dark Knight movie, which was interesting but a little *too* close to the original.
I have to admit I still like Gerard as Batman, though. *cringe* I have this weird habit of dropping characters into roles they maybe don't seem to suit, just because I like the idea, and then rewriting the roles as filtered through that characterization. Like, Batman!Gerard would definitely not be as dour and seeeeeerious as the usual Batman, but I think I'd kind of like that, actually; and it would be fun trying to translate some of the self-destructive ways Gerard has dealt with life in the past into Batman-baggage.
...also, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that I'd love to do a Justice League-ish [Cartoon Network version] sort of AU, and have Bob be The Flash and Frank be Martian Manhunter, which is granted probably the absolute opposite of what makes immediate sense. But I still would prefer it that way. Quiet, solid, steady Bob with superspeed abilities, self-esteem issues, and a reckless streak -- that would be fun. Plus it would be a great opportunity to work with Bob's quiet sense of humor. And just, Frank as a shape-shifting alien who can fly and walk through walls: he would have SO MUCH FUN. But then there could also be an underlying thread of melancholy that he hides really, really well, because he's the last of his people, and that would be interesting to incorporate into a story, you know?
...hi, I'm totally geeking out in your LJ. Woops.)
WAIT! While I'm here, can I ask for Gerard/Bob cuddling? (Or Gerard/Bob/Lyn-Z, but the meme thingy specified two characters, so I wasn't sure it would be okay to ask for a threesome.) (Of course, if you're actually contemplating Bob&Batman cuddling, never mind! Because. Bob & Batman! *nods*)

Date: 2009-08-25 04:23 pm (UTC)It's another night (week, month, something) on the road in this shitty van, and Ian is just so tired, but he still can't sleep. He wishes he had some weed left, because then maybe he could, but no.
He rolls over again and listens to the engine running.
"Psst," someone says. Cash. Obviously. "Hey, Ian?"
"Mmmf," Ian says and then, "Ooof, watch it, asshole," in a whisper, because Cash comes clambering over the seats and lands on Ian.
"You're warm, damn," he says in a surprised voice, and Ian grins.
"Victoria lent me a sleeping bag," and he can't keep the smug out of his voice.
"No shit? Niiiice," Cash draws it out until it's not even a double entendre, it's like, a quadruple entendre? Or whatever it becomes when it's completely obvious what someone really means.
"Oh yeah," Ian says, playing along even though they both know Victoria would never ever sleep with any of them. Ever.
Which is why Cash doesn't sound pissed or anything, just says, "Can I share?" and Ian nods, unzipping it and squirming around until they can use it as a blanket.
They lie still like that for about two minutes or something (Ian's not all that good at telling how much time has gone by, unless he's on stage where he has a beat to follow) and then Cash says, "Ian?"
"Yeah?"
"Your hair," Cash says, batting at it, "I have some of your hair up my nose."

Date: 2009-08-25 04:50 pm (UTC)Also, this is Paramore!cuddling. SORRY.
Bob's up so early. Too early. But there were noises in the walls, and he's barely slept at all. He's beginning to think--maybe they shouldn't have come here.
He glares at the coffee maker until it finally gives him a pot with a vengeful hiss (even the appliances here--it should be funny, but it's not) and then someone walks into the kitchen behind him.
"Bob," Mikey says, and Bob turns to face him. He can't keep back a dismayed sound--Mikey's pale, paler than usual, and he's shaking.
"What's up, Mikeyway?" he says, keeping his voice level and calm, his eyes on Mikey's face.
"Couldn't sleep, couldn't fucking sleep. There was this light--" Mikey makes a gesture that can mean anything, and Bob just feels cold.
"Didn't sleep at all?"
Mikey shakes his head.
"Then let's go sit on the couch, Mikey, okay? We're just gonna go into the living room and sit on the couch, it'll be awesome."
Bob keeps up the chattering until they get to the couch, when he, telegraphing his every move clearly, gently grasps Mikey's wrist and tugs him down to sit. Bob sits at one end of the couch and puts one hand on Mikey's shoulder.
"Come on," he says, "Lie down for a bit, head on my lap like on Warped, okay? Remember, that day when we hadn't slept and had to wait forever to go on because of tech issues?" Mikey nods and then shakes his head.
"I can't go to sleep," he says, "What if they come when I'm sleeping, what if--"
Bob shakes his head. "I'll stay awake, I promise. I'll stay awake and watch." He looks at Mikey really hard so he knows Bob means it, and then Mikey does lie down, curling up as best he can and closes his eyes.
Bob sits there for the next six hours until his band comes down, hand carefully stroking Mikey's hair, and watches. The house stays quiet.
