Oh man, I watched Whale Rider in 2005 in a classroom, and we did giggle at it a fair amount (Paikea means 'bad child' in Chinese), but it was also -- profoundly affecting. Occasionally I google it, every so often, to read the story again. How is the novel different from the movie? Is it sufficiently different that I won't be too prejudiced against it?
