it's the new year

harborshore"It's a new year," Z says, absently running her hand through Tennessee's hair.
Tennessee doesn't say anything in response, just turns her face into Z's side. She hasn't moved much since they got out and neither has Z, which is logical: Tennessee is still in pain and Z wants to stay close until she's sure Tennessee is feeling better.
"A new year?" Laena says from where she's lying flat on the floor, trying to regain some kind of a focus. They'd all of them lost most of their equilibrium in that fight, and Annie can't do what she usually does and bring them back together again, because she's in the back room fighting off a reaction headache the likes of which Laena has never seen before. Or felt, for that matter; she's getting some of the backwash every time she thinks about Annie, which is enough to knock her off-kilter all over again.
Z licks her lip. "A new year," she says. "It means there's going to be an Audit." She says it just like that, with the capital letter and all, and Laena swallows. They'd all lost friends in the last Audit. Not all cities pulled off a magical miracle rescue like New York did.
"Damn," she says, doesn't know what else to say.
Z knows, apparently. "We should do something," she says, looking down at Tennessee, who looks back at her, gaze steady.
"You think?" she says.
"How could we not?" Her voice is low and hoarse, and she touches Tennessee's side carefully where the bullet hit her.
"Not because of me," Tennessee says steadily.
"Not just because of you," Laena says, because she's sure, suddenly. Z looks up and meets her eyes. "We'll do something," Laena promises, and Z starts to smile.
