So there are TWO birthdays today. There's [livejournal.com profile] brilligspoons, who was one of my first friends on LJ. I love you hon, and I hope you have a fantastic day! I still remember that long, long discussion we had on feminist literature way back when, it was GREAT. Also, I love that you indulge my love of poetry. Speaking of which, here, have a poem:

Fully Empowered, by Pablo Neruda

I write in the clear sun, in the teeming street,
at full sea-tide, in a place where I can sing;
only the wayward night inhibits me,
but, interrupted by it, I recover space,
I gather shadows to last a long time.

The black crop of the night is growing
while my eyes in the meantime measure the plain.
So, from sun to sun, I forge the keys.
In the half light I look for locks
and keep on opening broken doors to the sea,
until I fill the cupboards up with foam.

And I do not weary of going and returning.
Death in its stone aspect does not stop me.
I am weary neither of being nor of non-being.

Sometimes I wonder where –-
was it from my father, my mother, or the mountains --
I inherited all my mineral obligations,

the threads spreading from a sea on fire ;
and I know I go on and on because I go on,
and I sing because I sing and because I sing.

There is no way of explaining what does happen
when I close my eyes and waver
as between two underwater channels.
One lifts me in its branches toward dying,
and the other sings in order that I may sing.

And so I am formed out of non-being,
and as the sea goes battering at a reef
in wave on wave of salty white-tops
and drags back stones in its ebb,
so what there is of death surrounding me
opens in me a window out to living,
and, in the spasm of being, I am asleep.
In the full light of day, I walk in the shade.

But it's also [livejournal.com profile] halflinen's birthday! Megan, oh Megan. One half of my Canadian OTP, she's been there during some tough, tough times for me and, just, she's supportive and sweet and amazing and funny and posts awesome recipes and writes lovely stories--I just, okay, I'm so glad she's in my life. Happy birthday, lady, I feel confident that it's going to be a good one. ♥

Because I feel reasonably sure you appreciate some science humor *grins*.

Oh, and also:

Now for stories, and hopefully you sometimes still read outside of bandom, because it's hard to rec anything there that I know you haven't seen. So I'm going for fics in the fandoms you sent me recs in last time, and hopefully there'll at least be one new story.

Earthbound Spook by [livejournal.com profile] cest_what: this is Harry/Draco, set during school but an AU, and oh my god, the way it fucks with canon and sticks to it, the way it's so sweet but still keeps some of the darkness of the HP universe--this is marvelous. And it's so joyful, too, at points.

We Few, We Happy Few by [livejournal.com profile] toujours_nigel: don't read this one on your birthday. It's Sirius!pov, written during the war, and with an added dimension that, oh, ow. But it's fantastic, or I wouldn't tell you to read it. You know.

Once More With Feeling by [livejournal.com profile] xylodemon: now, this one you may have read. It's the best crossover ever, HP/Good Omens, and everything about it is perfect, right down to Harry and Adam having things to say to each other and Crowley and, just, everyone. Perfection.

Play Hearts, Kid by [livejournal.com profile] zeitheist: hey, look, it's a Supernatural story! It's Andy/Ash, of all pairings, and it's so fucking awesome. Mythology, violence, and friendship falling into love, oh, and people fighting themselves so they can do the right thing. IT IS GREAT.

Well, I loved it, and I'm reading the fic as soon as I finish the latest chapter in my Christmas baking saga (The Butter Tarts).
