Tonight I went for a walk with dad, about an hour before the sunset. People were playing soccer and volleyball on the field near where we live, and the all-girl team was winning the volleyball game (much like it seems the only serious contenders in the Way-family croquet match was Alicia and Lyn-Z).

We crossed the road and sat down on the cliff, watching as the light settled over the grass and the skyline. Like being in a city and not, at once.

Then we saw hot-air balloons. Four of them, to be exact. They were coming closer, hovering over the trees, and it was beautiful, absolutely stunning. But what was initially looking like a gorgeous sunset, complete with balloons (like a movie), turned into a comedy of errors pretty soon, with some pretty scary moments.

feels like flying )

Now, I'm waiting for the joint aches to subside (modern medicine is sometimes marvelous) and looking at the dark outside. We can't see the stars, yet, but the closer we get to winter, the clearer they'll become.

I'd steal the death match meme, except I'm feeling sweet and cozy tonight. I'd rather talk about cuddling.

If you feel like it, give me two characters, bandom (MCR or MSI), DCU (Birds of Prey, the Bats (especially the ladies)), and Buffy, and I'll tell you about them cuddling. Wacky crossovers are totally okay, though please don't give me Bob and Batman.

I spent some time this weekend distracting myself while stuck in bed by writing ficlets for my icons. They were supposed to be about 200 words each, but I started with the one for Steve and Lyn-Z, and it's now 1500 words and most emphatically Not Done. These two are, though.

According to my mother, I currently look very waif-like, as I am wont to do when I'm ill, so if you could all imagine me looking pretty pathetic and plaintive and pale, you will all go here and vote for Bob, right? And Mikeyway, but he doesn't need any help at this point, so that's more okay. Look, it's Bob, okay? Also, throw in a vote for Siska while you're at it.

ETA: Darlings, darlings, no need to bash Spencer! He's pretty fabulous too.

Or tell me in comments how you're protesting against this poll because there was no MSI. I definitely get that. Hey, gimme my lady bassist! And drummer! >:(

Just so this entry isn't just me confessing my well-known love for Bob Bryar/demanding more MSI in bandom, and because I need distracting from my virus and I'm too tired to read, ask me my fannish Top Fives. Or literary. Or feminist. Or something.

Today is Kitty's birthday, my best friend and my ex, the one who knows me best of all, the one who loves me despite or because of all my various strange qualities, the girl who told me I was beautiful until I could look in the mirror and almost see what she saw. She gets it, no matter what, and she's gone through so goddamn much that I never fail to be grateful for her ability to get back up. I'm so glad she's in my life. Also, she makes fun of me when I need it, which is very essential. *grins* You'll never see this, but happy birthday, baby girl.

Today is also, as you all know, Gerard Way's five-years-clean-and-sober-day. I'm so fucking happy for him, and so glad he found it in himself to keep going, five years ago. When I tell people about my headfirst tumble into bandom, I tend to say something like, "Well, I started by reading FOB fanfic, then transitioned into reading MCR, and then I saw that spit-in-their-fucking-faces-video, and that was pretty much it." Gee Way, you care, and I love you and your merry band of misfits for it. Happy birthday, you too, and thank you.

I'll just say this: I'd like it if my body would condescend to WORK, dammit. Medication is great, but I'm seriously sick of this. And you guys must be sick of hearing about it too--I promise I'll stop whining about it soon. It's just that I'm so slow at everything right now, and it kind of really sucks. Some of it is the meds, some of it is the virus, so I just have to go with it. Frustrating.

HOWEVER. Things could be a lot worse. I'm in fucking Singapore with my best friend (\o/), and MCR are being awesome, just awesome (\o/). Three new songs! I LOVE THEM SO. God, my band, this band, NEVER LEAVE ME. TOUR IN EUROPE.

Am about to totter out for a late lunch. Time to apply sunscreen and insect repellant and find my water bottle. Have a lovely day, darlings--you should be just waking up. ETA: Or going to bed--I forgot how big the time difference really is. *grins*

What is today, seriously. I woke up to my stomach going, no, when you thought you'd managed to travel without getting fucked up, guess what, you were WRONG. And then I find out Brian Schechter left the music business? Not on, universe. Kitty's exam had better go brilliantly, is all I'm saying.

I'm currently on her couch contemplating a lot of Bob/Brian AUs because honestly, they're always going to be my favorite non-canon pairing (my favorite canon one is Chantal/Jimmy, but that's a little scary to contemplate right now, given that they apparently both read fic, wtf). You're all asleep, or I'd tell you to come play with me. Stupid time difference.

Anyway, love, love, you guys exist and my view here is fairly spectacular, so.

Scratch Your Name (Into the Fabric of This World)

Pairing: Background Bob/Brian, Chantal/Jimmy, Amanda/Dusty/Katie Kay.
Word Count: 24,214
Rating/Warnings: R. Character death, violence, some blood/gore, brief mentions of torture and a past rape.
Summary: As the only survivor of a series of executions by the Squad at an underground music show, Lindsey starts her own private revolution doing (illegal) street art. Then, one night, caught out by and running from a Patrol group, she gets unexpected help in evading capture -- and joins a much more public revolution. Set in a very different New York City.

Author's Notes:

This fic would never have happened without a great deal of help from some amazing, amazing people. First and foremost, I can't tell you how much I owe [livejournal.com profile] enhendi and [livejournal.com profile] wasoncedelight--they held me to my own canon, yelled at me about characterization and punctuation and my many, many run-on sentences. [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski helped me build this universe, in a series of emails wherein I went "What if..." and she nodded encouragingly at me and asked intelligent questions, and then she betaed one of the early drafts as well. Finally, without the hand-holding, the cheering, and the support of [livejournal.com profile] nokomis305, [livejournal.com profile] thesamefire, and [livejournal.com profile] absenteye and many other poor souls on my flist, the story would not have been finished. I love all of you very much, ladies.

Also and obviously, I am most grateful to my wonderful artist [livejournal.com profile] tuesdaysgone, my fantastic mixers [livejournal.com profile] sweetnovicane and [livejournal.com profile] astaria51, who created marvelous, marvelous bonus content for my story, and to the [livejournal.com profile] bandombigbang mods for running this awesome challenge again. Someone mentioned color-coded spreadsheets, and oh man, I can't even imagine the madness. Finally, I borrowed the summary from here.

So, hey, a lot of big bangs have been posted. I love the Gerard-has-a-vampire-detective-agency story and the Jon-is-a-reluctant-Victorian-gentleman story, oh, and that one where Frank is a policeman, yes, that was great. Good stories make me happy, long stories make me happy, and the combination of both is fantastic. A proper rec post will be forthcoming once I finish the edits on this stupid paper. (You thought I was done? So did I.)

But, okay, In the Walls was posted today. I was fortunate enough to get to beta it. She scared the hell out of me (for the record, editing a horror story at night in a tiny cottage that you will have to leave after dark to walk to another tiny cottage is a bad idea. Don't do it.) and I loved every minute of it. Then I got to watch her take my (sometimes very inarticulate) suggestions and make her epic (did I mention it's 73,243 words long?) even more awesome. I got emails that asked me about minuscule differences between paragraphs or sentences, and please imagine me saying that in a gleeful and happy voice--[livejournal.com profile] thesamefire is a really careful and attentive writer, and watching her process was so great. The final result is scary and amazing and oh, it makes me so happy.

If you like horror at all, if you like reading about the band making music, if you like Mikey Way and careful Gerard Way POVs, if you like excellent writing, awesome pacing or great details, then read this story.

So I'm presenting Wednesday. This is, for those of you lucky enough to not have seen me in the throes of academia before, going to (read: has already begun to) make me a little crazy. Or unhappy. Or both. So if I'm making anguished faces at you, this is why. Suggested remedies include patting me on the head, hugs, and telling me to go do my work and stop being such a wretch.

But on to happier things! This got loooooooong.

Non-bandom related awesome
  1. First, Amanda Palmer posted an essay written by Karl Paulnack of the Boston Conservatory, on Why Music Matters. Read it, oh, read it. A quote: )
  2. More on the hilarity end of the happiness scale, [livejournal.com profile] sarahtales (formerly mistful) posted her parody of Star Trek here. If you're unfamiliar with her movie parodies, she doesn't tend toward the mean, but toward the ridiculous. Quote:

SPOCK: Can't read my, no you can't read my poker face.
KIRK: Sure I can. It says 'I want to cut a bitch.'
SPOCK: ... Your insight is uncanny.

  3. And the last non-bandom related piece of happiness is the vid Glorious by [livejournal.com profile] such_heights. I've been meaning to do a vid rec post forever, but it doesn't look like it's happening any time soon, so I'm reccing this one now. It's a multi-fandom female-centric vid, and it has so many female characters being awesome that it's sort of the best thing in the world to rewatch when you're feeling a little useless. Watch Teyla, Morgana, Martha Jones, Buffy, Faith, Bones, Angela and the other 170, just watch them. And the next time someone tells you that there aren't any interesting female characters, point them at this vid.

Bandom-related happy
  1. This fandom is the best fandom, etcetera, forever, amen. Let's start with fic. Awesome fic.
    Awesome, awesome fic. )

  2. Lastly, did you know I love Lyn-Z? Yeah? And here I thought I was being stealthy. *grins* I wanted to post about her on her birthday, but as it turned out, that was not a good day for me, so I'm doing it today instead. This is unrelated to the fact that she and Gerard just had the baby (not that the existence of Bandit Lee Way isn't also a happy thought, just, that's not why I love Lyn-Z, y'all). SO.
    badass, beautiful and bright )

Title: Wait for the Morning
Rating: R
Pairing: Bob/Brian
Disclaimer: To the best of my knowledge, none of what happens in this story is true. Except for Bob's opinions on LA drivers.
Summary: Bob kidnaps Brian at too damn early o'clock to go on a stupid "photo quest" for Gerard's artistic vision or something, and Brian's pretty sure there are ulterior motives but Bob is acting weird and he can't quite figure it out.
Warnings: Uh, none.
Word Count: 11,200.
Author's Notes: Beta'd by [livejournal.com profile] torakowalski, without whom this would not exist and who loves these two as much as I do, and the incomparable [livejournal.com profile] thesamefire, who saved me from Fall Out Boy references and made everything sound so much less stupid. This is for them. Title is from Bob Dylan's "If Not For You."

Come on, Schechter, get up. )

Wait for the Morning, part 2
harborshore: (Default)
[livejournal.com profile] nokomis305 just posted this, and I apologize for the re-post, but I can't not, I want it in my journal too. It's just the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long time. Chris Anthony, photographer (who was raised in Stockholm, incidentally), has done a series called Venice, which features, among others, Gerard Way and Lyn-Z Ballato. Yes.

Seriously, isn't that the most stunning, lovely picture ever? I still can't be coherent about it (I left poor [livejournal.com profile] nokomis305 the most stuttery comment ever) but I'm so, so glad it exists. Just--look at the water, and that kiss, and the colors, and the two of them together, just look.

ETA:There is one more picture of them on the website, a wide-angle shot where they're tiny against masses of water, embracing still, and, oh. Go look at it.

I'm not sure how it became Sunday without my noticing it, but I most emphatically do not approve. It's also the Sunday Europe switches over to Daylight Savings Time, which means I'm supposed to have one more hour than I have, dammit, and my take-home exam is intimidating me a little.

Some things about this week:
  1. Tuesday was Ada Lovelace Day, and when I think about women in technology, I will always think about my mother. She went back to school at 32 to get her undergraduate degree in mathematics, and ended up learning programming despite never having seen a computer before. Today, she's a nuclear physicist, working in enormous cyclotrons with equipment that ranges from state-of-the-art to almost-falling-to-pieces; she writes her own simulations and teaches herself new programming languages every now and then, just because. And she wants me to teach her CSS, as soon as I get better at it (because lord knows I suck right now, but I'll learn).

  2. MCR's twitter continues to be a source of JOY and ADORABLENESS, even when (especially when) Frank bitches about grammar or Bob makes fun of everyone. Also, it's now canon that they're sort of at a loss without their wives--the entire band spent hours and hours on twitter the night their wives went to a show. I'm ridiculous, I know it, but that band and the way they love their awesome significant others makes me so happy. (Did you know Lindsey is awesome at oil painting? (AND EVERYTHING EVER?) &THEM;

  3. Another source of JOY is Georgette Heyer: I spent all my in-between time last Friday (subway, lunch, subway, fifteen minutes in the dressing room at the swimming pool) finishing Friday's Child, which was delightful and caused my inner monologue to sound like a Regency novel for the rest of the night. Be glad I didn't post then, it was very ridiculous. If anyone has read a lot of Heyer and could tell me which one to read next, I'd be most grateful. I want ones that end like this one, with the couple being on equal footing (my politics are showing, I'm aware), because an ending where the girl is a silly little idiot who needs taking care of will spoil the whole book for me. It's fine if she starts out that way, but not if she doesn't develop.

  4. The fic I've been bitching about for a month and a half is so close to done, I can't even. The course which is partly to blame for the fic taking this long is also almost over--Tuesday I turn in the aforementioned take-home exam, and then I am FREE...to do research for my mini-thesis. Which is, at least, a lot more fun.

  5. Lastly, thank you (you as in plural, obviously) for the support and the help and the beta-reading and the compliments and the everything, really. ♥

Title: Close Your Eyes, Close the Door
Rating: R
Pairing: Gerard/Lyn-Z
Disclaimer: None of this is true.
Summary: Lyn-Z steals the handcuffs from the Desolation Row video shoot.
Warnings: (fairly mild) D/s, handcuffs
Word Count: 1500
Author's Notes: Thanks and ♥ to [livejournal.com profile] enhendi for beta reading and being right all the time, and to [livejournal.com profile] nokomis305 for writing most of the first girl!oral scene and for being a darling. The title is from Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight."

As they leave the video shoot, Lindsey wraps one hand around his right wrist and doesn't let go when they get in the cab together. )
harborshore: (daffodils)
First, BOB. Yes, please encourage your fans to traumatize poor Jeff Watson. Also, be more of a little shit, I dare you. He's such an adorable asshole, I can't even. i told them it was an accident. they said phones dont accidentally fly into walls. thats not true, look at the picture.

Second, IL all [livejournal.com profile] absenteyes. She sent me this: warning: awesome behind cut ) and this video, because BFF kissing is A++. Bert and Quinn, you guys. Bert and Quinn. ♥
harborshore: (daffodils)
And then this happened. You guys, THIS BAND.

They've been surveying the musical landscape that's appeared in their absence, and they're not very pleased by what they see. Take, for example, the (working) title of one of their new songs: "New Hair, Same Sh--."

"It's about having new hair, but it's the same sh--. That's the concept," Way laughed. "I think the new album is going to be a response to the two years of touring on Parade. A reaction to what's happening right now — everything that we're not a part of — and a response to it."
.

Highlights of the video embedded in the article include Gerard babbling, no one else saying anything or paying attention to Gerard at all, Ray drumming on Mikey's back, Mikey doing his Artful Model Pose, Frank wearing a hat and stroking his beard, and Bob hiding in the back. It's business as usual, and they are so ADORABLE.

Also, THIS. Because Ray's dog loves guitars too! ♥
